EMDR for Veterans

Experience a breakthrough in trauma recovery. Resilience Illinois offers specialized EMDR therapy to help Veterans process the past without getting stuck in it.

What is EMDR?

EMDR for veterans stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR focuses directly on the memory and how it's stored in the brain. For Veterans, this is a powerful tool because it allows you to process combat or service-related trauma without needing to describe every detail out loud. It's a physiological approach to healing that "unfreezes" the trauma response.

Why Veterans Choose EMDR

No "Re-telling" Required

You don't have to relive the trauma by talking about it repeatedly. We focus on the brain's natural healing process through bilateral stimulation.

Faster Symptom Relief

Veterans often report a significant decrease in night terrors, flashbacks, and "on-edge" feelings in fewer sessions than traditional therapy.

VA Approved

EMDR is recognized as a high-priority, evidence-based treatment for PTSD by the Department of Veterans Affairs.

The 8 Phases of Veteran EMDR

1
History & Planning: We identify the "target" memories from your service that are causing distress today.
2
Preparation: Learning "grounding" techniques to stay in control during the processing phase.
3
Assessment: Identifying the negative beliefs you hold about yourself due to the trauma.
4
Desensitization: Using eye movements or taps while focusing on the memory to reduce its emotional charge.
5
Installation: Replacing negative beliefs with positive, mission-focused truths.
EMDR PRO-TIP: EMDR isn't just for combat trauma. It is highly effective for Military Sexual Trauma (MST), Moral Injury, and the anxiety associated with the transition back to civilian life.
COMMON PITFALL: "Self-Stigma." Veterans often think therapy won't work because "talking about it" hasn't helped. EMDR is different—it's about re-wiring the brain's response, not just talking about the event.

Veteran EMDR FAQ

Does the VA pay for EMDR in the community?

Yes. If you are eligible for Community Care, the VA covers 100% of EMDR sessions at Resilience Illinois. There are no out-of-pocket costs for you.

Will I lose control during EMDR?

Never. You are fully awake and alert during the entire process. You can stop the session at any time. It is not hypnosis.
