Your Right to Immediate, Free Care

In 2026, no veteran should face a crisis alone. Veteran mental health crisis care is a protected right under the COMPACT Act. This means you can receive emergency suicide prevention and stabilization care at Resilience Illinois or any authorized facility at no cost to you—regardless of your VA enrollment status. We are here to provide the clinical "overwatch" you need to get through the storm.

Clinical Intake: Our team conducts a priority assessment to determine the best level of immediate care.
4
Stabilization: We provide up to 30 days of inpatient or 90 days of outpatient crisis follow-up care.
5
Recovery Plan: Transitioning from crisis care into long-term therapy and support systems.
CRISIS PRO-TIP: You do NOT need to be enrolled in VA healthcare to receive crisis care. If you served in the active military, naval, or air service and were discharged under any condition except dishonorable, you are eligible for $0 crisis care.
COMMON PITFALL: "Waiting for the VA." During a crisis, do not wait for a VA appointment. Go to the nearest emergency room or authorized community provider like Resilience Illinois. The VA is legally required to cover the bill for your stabilization.

Crisis Care FAQ

What is the COMPACT Act?

The COMPACT Act is a law that ensures any veteran in acute suicidal crisis can go to any VA or non-VA health care facility for emergency suicide care at no cost. This includes ambulance fees and follow-up care.

Will I get a bill for emergency crisis care?

No. If the care is for a mental health crisis, the VA will pay for, provide, or reimburse the full cost of your care and transportation.
