Securing Your Counseling Authorization

1
Initial Consult: Request a behavioral health consult from your VA Primary Care Manager.
2
Specify Provider: Mention Resilience Illinois as your requested counseling site.
3
RFS Approval: The VA issues a Request for Service (RFS) to our administrative team.
4
Voucher Receipt: You receive notification that your community care voucher is active.
5
Intake Session: We begin your counseling plan with a comprehensive clinical assessment.
COUNSELING PRO-TIP: Ensure your referral specifies "Individual Counseling." If you also require family or group counseling, these must be listed as separate line items on your VA authorization to ensure coverage.
COMMON PITFALL: "Unauthorized Extensions." Many Veterans assume counseling continues indefinitely. You must work with your counselor to submit an extension request to the VA 30 days before your current authorization ends.
