Starting Mental Health Treatment After a Major Life Event in Illinois

For most of his life, Michael was known as someone dependable.

He was 45, had a steady job, a long marriage, and a simple routine. Weekends were usually spent doing yard work or watching local football games. He was the person others counted on when things got difficult.

But in late 2025, everything went into a downward spiral!

He lost his job after his company restructured, and not long after that, his father passed away unexpectedly.

For the first time in his life, Michael felt like he couldn’t hold everything together on his own anymore.

When Stress Starts Taking Over

At first, Michael tried to handle everything on his own.

He spent his days looking for work and his weekends helping his mother after his father passed away. Whenever people asked how he was doing, he would simply say, “I’m fine, just busy.”

But inside, things were starting to change.

According to the American Psychological Association, major life stress, like grief and losing a job, can build up over time and overwhelm the mind and body.

Michael slowly began experiencing:

Persistent Irritability

He started snapping at his wife over small things, like the dishwasher not being loaded correctly.

Loss of Interest

The hobbies that used to bring him peace, like watching football, now felt like a chore!

Physical Fatigue

He was sleeping 8 hours a night but waking up feeling tired like he hadn’t rested at all.

At first, Michael thought he was just grieving. But over time, it became something deeper; a feeling of being disconnected from his life, the people around him, and even himself.

The Breaking Point

Everything changed one Tuesday morning.

Michael was sitting in a coffee shop, trying to work on his resume, when a song came on that reminded him of his father. Suddenly, he felt like he couldn’t breathe. His heart started racing, and the room around him felt too small.

He left his laptop on the table and rushed outside, sitting in his car, trembling for nearly an hour.

That’s when he realized he could no longer hold it together. The pressure of always being the strong one had become too much, and he was dealing with more than just stress.

Many people struggle with anxiety or depression after major life changes, but still feel like asking for help means they’ve failed in some way.

Michael realized that seeking help was the only way to get his life back! So he reached out to Resilience Illinois.

Michael’s Treatment Step-by-Step

Step 1: Entering the Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)

After an initial assessment, it became clear that Michael needed more than weekly therapy. Therefore, we suggested that he join our Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP).

The PHP allowed him to work on his mental health from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday through Friday.

Here’s what his PHP experience looked like:

Morning Group Sessions

In group therapy, Michael met other people who were also dealing with grief, stress, and major life changes. It helped him realize he wasn’t alone in what he was feeling.

Learning New Coping Skills

Through Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), he started understanding how negative thoughts were affecting his anxiety and panic.

Going home each evening gave Michael the chance to use what he was learning in his everyday life.

Step 2: Medication Management

During PHP, Michael also received medication management support.

A mental health professional helped him understand how ongoing stress and anxiety were affecting his mind and body. With the right treatment plan, his anxiety became more manageable, making it easier for him to focus during therapy and start feeling more stable again.

The goal wasn’t to numb his emotions; it was to give his mind and nervous system a chance to slow down and recover.

Step 3: Transitioning to the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

After a few weeks in PHP, Michael started feeling more stable. His panic attacks became less frequent, and he was finally sleeping better.

But he also knew he still needed support.

That’s when he moved into an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). He attended sessions a few days a week while slowly getting back into daily life, including applying and interviewing for jobs again.

During IOP, Michael began working through his grief more deeply. He opened up about losing his father, his fears about the future, and the pressure he had been carrying for so long.

Over time, he learned that being strong doesn’t mean ignoring pain. It means finding healthy ways to cope with it and keep moving forward.

Step 4: Outpatient Therapy & Support Groups

After finishing his intensive programs, Michael continued with ongoing support instead of stopping treatment completely.

He began weekly outpatient therapy and also joined a support group for men going through major life changes.

The Result: A Healthier, Stronger Version of Michael

Six months later, Michael’s life looks very different.

He started a new job that gives him more balance and more time with his family. He still has difficult days, and he still misses his father, but he no longer feels disconnected or overwhelmed by everything around him.

Now, he recognizes his stressors and knows how to manage them using the coping tools he learned during treatment.

Michael didn’t become perfect. He became more self-aware, more supported, and more willing to ask for help when he needs it.
